Liepaya lies in the Kurzeme region in the western part of the Republic of Latvia, and is the third largest city in the country. For many centuries the city has enjoyed the reputation of the Amber Capital of the Baltic coast and, taking solicitious care of its heritage, it has preserved many historical buildings dating back to the 17th & 18th centuries.

Trams here provided the first electric public transport system in the Baltic States and Liepaya’s residents continue to take pride in its smart narrow-gauge tram lines.

The city is undergoing active growth and a Special Economic Zone has been set up in its port. Metallurgy, wood processing, fishing and textile haberdashery are the main industries in the region.

Thousands of tourists come each year in order to take a holiday in this popular health resort.  Its beaches offer environmentally clean sea and golden sand and have been awarded the prestigious international “Blue Banner” award for several years running.

The city boasts numerous hotels, health spas, elegant restaurants and cosy cafes, not to mention bowling centres, golf and tennis facilities and an ice-rink at the recently constructed Ice Hall.
